Protest Registration of Young Women's Leadership Academy

9:00a - 10:30a

Fox Tech High School

637 N. Main Ave

San Antonio, TX

Members of the League for Public School Justice peacefully protested the closure of Horace Mann Academy, the neighborhood Public School while SAISD conducted a registration process for the Young Women's Leadership Academy.  For any parent that experienced the travesty they called "registration" for our own SAISD students last fall this was something to watch.  These hand picked students were treated extra special including Uniform fittings......I bought our last uniforms at Dollar General and did not see a fitting room anywhere.  Perhaps when they talk about improving customer service in SAISD they should consider treating ALL SAISD students they way they did these girls this Saturday morning.  Pictures to be posted soon in our Photo Gallery.

You are cordially invited to a Community Forum Concerning the SAISD closure and
Consolidation of six neighborhood public schools.

Update: A Community Forum concerning the SAISD closure and Consolidation of six neighborhood public schools was held Tuesday, May 20, 2008; 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Jefferson United Methodist Church 758 Donaldson Ave., San Antonio, TX 78201

The media was there--fabulous. The media announced the meeting--also fabulous. Thanks to Rep. Martinez Fischer's office for their support in notifying the press and with for sticking it out with us throughout the process; And many Thanks to Trey Martinez Fischer, Tommy Adkisson and Ed Garza for speaking at this event. Special Thanks to Jefferson United Methodist Church for providing us the meeting space, The Horace Mann Jazz Band for the pre Community Forum concert and the Koffee Kup for providing refreshments. We are grateful to the representatives from Justin Rodriguez's office and Senator Leticia Van de Putte's office for attendance. It was unfortunate that none of the invited representatives from SAISD attended. A new face in the audience was a concerned parent from Bowie Elementary.  Bienvenedos!  We look forward to seeing representation from your area.  Most important we want to thank to the community that did attend this Community Forum. It was our goal to reach out to you with information that may not have been available any other way. We hope we provoked you to think about what is going on in this and related communities and that you are moved to action.  Please look for pictures from this event in our Photo Gallery in the near future.

WE WENT TO THE DANCE!  SECOND PICKETING OF EL MIRADOR

6p - 8p

It was First Friday and NCAA Weekend. THIS WAS MAJOR EXPOSURE FOR US TO A BIGGER THAN LIFE SIZE CROWD....WE TOOK ADVANTAGE OF OUR OPPORTUNITY TO STAND OUT.  Turn out support from the Mann Academy, Travis Elementary and Carroll Academy Coalition of Defenders was outstanding.  We conducted a peaceful demonstration to the sounds of a Jazz Band playing at the Filling Station accross the street.  We circulated our petitions and had an resounding response.  We caught the eye of a videographer from Univision Channel 41 and he spent time with a representative of each campus as well as some nice B roll shots.  We even had guests join us in our line!

THE PICKETING OF EL MIRADOR

Horace Mann Academy,  Travis Elementary and Carroll Academy visit El Mirador Restaurant and their not there to eat!

The restaurant was chosen because it is owned by Julian Trevino, the president of the SAISD Board of Trustees. Trustee, Carlos Villarreal, Assistant Secretary for the SAISD Board of Trustees is employed by Trevino at El Mirador Restaurant. I wonder if either of them ever noticed they are both on the School Board? Or were they hoping no one else would notice?  Conflict of interest?  How can Villareal disagree on a vote and still collect a paycheck from his Brother Board Member/Employer?

As a result of our picketing we were told we upset some folks with SAISD and were asked to come to a truce. There is no suprise that they did not offer any consessions you would expect of a truce...in other words just stop and go home.  NOT US!
