Horace Mann Academy opened in 1935.  We are the only charter Middle School in the San Antonio Independent School District and we are located in the historic Monticello area of San Antonio. 
 
 
 
Our school opened in 1935 (closed June 2008) and was named for Horace Mann, the 'father of public education.'  The building underwent a renovation in 2002 when a new Library and Fine Arts building were added.  Mann's attendance area is bounded by Thomas Jefferson High School to the north and Woodlawn Lake to the south.  Mann's enrollment averages 575 students in grades six through eight and is approximately 94 percent Hispanic, 3 percent African American and 3 percent White. 

 

The school is staffed by 68 employees including 34 teachers with an average of over 10 years of experience and a student to teacher ratio of approximately 20 to 1.  Many of the faculty and staff members hold Master's Degrees and one holds a Doctorate Degree.  Teachers' expertise in their fields has led them to be district, region, or national presenters.

 

We at Horace Mann Academy are committed to the academic and social development of our students to prepare them to enter high school.  We aim to always be vocal, visible, and vigilant.  We encourage parental involvement and support because with your help, we will reach our goal of exemplary.

(Cooper Middle school made the Texas Monthy Best School List,

sure let's close them!!!) .

 In Duron's contract, it mentions the board will review his performance twice--in January and in June. I wonder when they'll do that. Hmmmmmmmm

HORACE MANN ACADEMY STUDENTS CONTINUE TO SUCCEED

 

Saturday, October 25, 2008 the San Antonio Founders Day Alliance will be conducting a special awards program at San Fernando Cathedral, at 10:30 a.m.

 

Horace Mann Academy student Tiffany Jew wrote a winning essay and will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship to the San Antonio Community College of her choice when she completes high school.

COFFEE WITH THE PRINCIPAL OF THOMAS JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL

 

Some of our students are still in Middle School while our 8th graders moved up to High School.  For those of you who have students that are now attending Thomas Jefferson High School there will be a "Coffee with the Principal" next Thursday, Oct. 16 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. in the Jefferson Cafeteria. It may be tough to get out of work but if you can, please come out and meet new Principal Samuel Hogue.  If you have any questions, you may contact Ms. Mary Rodriguez, the Home Support Liaison at 736-1981.

 

 

HOW DID THE ENROLLMENT TRANSITION GO AT LONGFELLOW?

 

8/25/08 Marked the first day of school for SAISD 2008-2009 school year.  There were reports that records for 6th grade students coming in from the natural feeder schools were NOT in the system when the students arrived on the first day of classes at Longfellow Middle School.  Parents were delayed from their work schedules to stay and try to enroll their children in what ever classes were left.  One parent reported the choices were very slim.  If you can confirm this situation or would like to share your experience on that first day, or any other enrollment problems at Longfellow or any of the other schools effected by the closing of Horace Mann Academy or the other schools closed by the SAISD Board please write us at horacemannacademy@hotmail.com or visit our blog at: http://www.savehoracemann.blogspot.com/

 

NO MORE FREE LUNCHES

8/13/08

 

A mass mailing was sent out just days before the annual registration for SAISD students.  The announcement was regarding rising food costs for SAISD and the intent to charge students $2.00 for lunch.  Families may still apply for the Lunch program if they feel they qualify....AND EACH OF YOU SHOULD.  Why?  SAISD is providing a free lunch program for the Young Women's Leadership Academy. 

 

For those of you that thought an All Girls school in our neighborhood was going to be "real nice".....and it was a burden to tax payers to have Horace Mann Academy serve the community where it is located....watch your tax dollars work for outsiders.  The Young Women's Leadership Academy not only gets free lunches but they get free uniforms and other privileges not offered to our own students....in fact in some cases taken away to give to them, AND YOU PAY FOR IT.
